Medicare Social InsuranceMedicare is a social insurance program that is provided by government that ensures all citizens above sixty five years and younger people that have disabilities have access to health insurance regardless of any medical history or their income status. The social security administration is responsible for determining those eligible for Medicare Social Insurance as well as processing the premium payments.

Medicare Part A and B

Medicare is divided into four parts; part A is called hospital insurance. This covers inpatient bills for food, tests and a semiprivate room. Medicare covers a hundred days maximum per ailment, in a skilled nursing facility this will be portioned into two; first twenty days are fully paid for by Medicare while the other remaining day s require a co-payment. Most private medicare health providers offer these benefits as part of their plan.

Part B is medical insurance. This covers some aspects that are not provided for in part A. This is most times outpatient services. It is however important to note that this part is optional and may be deferred if one is still working. This may otherwise lead to a ten percent lifetime penalty for not enrolling. Once you have met the deductible, Part B becomes fully operational. This part also covers durable medical equipment such as artificial limbs; other aspects covered include x-rays and any diagnostic tests.

What is Medicare advantage plan? This is commonly referred to as part C. It is a choice in Medicare where Medicare benefits are given by private insurance firms that have been approved by Medicare. This plan includes all the benefits offered by both part A and B that is hospital and medicare social insurance respectively. Its only the hospice portion that is not included, as it remains covered by the original Medicare.  Medicare advantage plans also offer extra coverage which includes dental, visual, hearing and other wellness/health programs.
There are different types of Medicare advantage plans such as preferred provider organization plans. Here you get your preferred primary care physician who may then refer you to a specialist. Other medicare advantage plans allow you to see or use any hospital or doctor approved by Medicare, thus you do not need a referral from a preferred primary care physician to see a specialist. There is also the special needs plan, and the most common one being health maintenance organization plans.

In order to join a Medicare advantage plan one is advised to compare what they offer as they are not all the same.  The cost of a Medicare advantage plan vary.  You pay your part B premiums, it may charge you an extra monthly premium plus other out of pocket expenses like co-insurance. It has some advantages, the main one being its ability to cover the extra health programs such as visual.
Medicare advantage plans that cover prescription drugs are often referred to as Medicare part D. This is a plan that will cater for the extra cost over what you original Medicare covers. After considering what Medicare does cover, one then goes ahead to consider the insurance providers that offer this coverage. You then consider their terms to ensure you get the best bargain, as different companies may offer various medicare benefit packages but at different premiums.
